Stroke regression

It will soon be two years since my ischemic brain stem stroke. Up until three months ago, I was making good progress. I was going to therapy three days a week and the gym three days a week. I was getting to the point where I could walk without a cane. But over the last three months, I have regressed to the point to where I can barely walk with a cane. Nothing has changed as far as routine, stress, diet, etc. A follow up MRI in August this year didn't show any changes and the doctor didn't have any answers. Why do you think I am regressing and is this a normal part of stroke recovery?
