Comments for Physical Exercise and Fatigue After Stroke

Stroke Rehabilitation

I had a severe stoke a year ago that affected my right side completely. I had to relearn how to walk again and use my left hand for everything like bathing, using the restroom, and learning to dress. It was really rough, but with determination and physical, occupational and speech therapy for several months (5-8),I became self-sufficient. I walk with a cane when I'm outside, but not at home. I can even drive with my left hand and arm. My generation learned to do that (71 now). I go to most places on my own now because of hard work, enduring severe pain, and a determination to get better. The OT & PT said that I may be able to drive in a year and a half. I did it in 8 months with determination and hard work. The right arm and hand is slow healing but I'm hopeful & prayerful. I go to the gym 3-4 times a week. KEEP WORKING!KEEP PRAYING.

Sleeping and Stroke

I find now that my husband sleeps more than when he first came home, after his stroke...

He seems to sleep for most of the day, and then sleeps all night too...now I will admit, he might not be asleep all the time, he may just be laying with his eyes closed, but it sure is frustrating to watch..

I feel that he is getting worse, instead of better...it's almost as though he has given up, and doesn't want to make the effort to get better..

Comment from website owner: Some strokes can effect an individual's motivation and initiation. Check with his MD and see if there are any meds that can help with him being tired and disengaged. Also, make sure your husband is not dehydrated. I've seen several stroke patients who came in dehydrated who really perked up after getting IV fluids.
