My 3 year old son with faccid hand.
by: Anonymous

I don't know how I got myself here, but I must say I m learning alot. Thanks so much.

My 3 year old son was diagnosed with Acute flaccid paralysis that affected his right hand in march 2016. Iniatialy, there was no movement in the hand but after about 2 months we started noticing movement in the fingers by the Grace of God. He can open and close the palm to an extent but not yet firm. He can also twist the hand between the elbow joint and the finger. But we are still looking up to seeing him being in control of the hand and being able to lift the hand up. He started school but uses his left hand for now.
Please if you could advise us on what could help him lift his hand up and be in full control.

For your information we have physiotherapist and occupational therapist but I think they are giving up easily.

Stroke-rehab.com response: You didn't specify what caused your son's hand flaccidity, but it sounds like you are doing all the right things. If it was a nerve palsy or brachial plexus injury, then it will probably heal over time (unless there was extreme damage). Nerves heal at a very slow rate and can take many months to recover. If it's due to a brain injury or stroke, then recovery is not as easy to predict. His physician should be able to give you some idea of recovery expectations. It's definitely a good sign that he is seeing return. If for some reason the therapist will not continue to see him, you can request more therapy orders from his MD as you see new movement and changes. New movement can warrant more therapy orders since it is a change in condition, and you can always seek a different therapist if you are not pleased with the one he is seeing.
